Have you heard of sex-positivity? The sex-positive movement seeks to change the cultural perception around sex and sexuality. The ultimate goal is to get rid of the shame that surrounds sex and to help people view sex as a healthy and natural expression of humanity. With an open dialogue around sex, it will ultimately lead to more education and safer sex practices for everyone.
Overcoming the Past
Learning to be sex-positive can be a long road for many people, since society has conditioned us so deeply to believe sex is shameful, something to be done in the shadows and never discussed in polite company. The best way to start is by teaching yourself to be open and curious about sex. Ponder what you’re curious about, and then try to find those answers. There are countless resources online that can enable you to begin your journey of knowledge. Once you’ve fostered a healthy curiosity about sex, you can take steps towards a more compassionate and sex-positive outlook on the world. You might be able to open up with your partner or friends more about sex. You can tell your partner the things you would like to try in the bedroom or share your favorite erotica with your friends.
Be Accepting
In addition to curiosity about sex, another part of sex-positivity is accepting other people’s sexual practices. This includes everything from those who engage in group sex to people who enjoy having many different partners to individuals who choose not to have sex at all. People might engage in kinks or fetishes that don’t appeal to you or you cannot understand, and that is okay! Sex-positivity is knowing that as long as everything is safe, and consensual, the acts and resulting pleasure are completely acceptable.
Talk About Sex
Instead of balking at the mere mention of sex, once one begins to practice sex-positivity, we can talk about it more openly and even learn to celebrate our unique differences.
